Prof. Tim Schmidt is a spectroscopist whose work spans astrochemistry to renewable energy.
His laboratory specialises in recording the spectra of radical and ionic carbonaceous species of astrophysical interest. He discovered four band systems of the interstellar molecule C2, and demonstrated how this dissociates under starlight, explaining why comet comae are green, but not the tails. His work on interstellar dust analogues allowed the interstellar abundance of aliphatic carbon to be determined.
