Prof. Pall Thordarson (Palli) obtained his BSc. from U. Iceland in 1996 and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Sydney in 2001. After Research Fellowship in the Netherlands and back at the University of Sydney, Palli was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at UNSW in 2007. He is now a Professor and the Deputy Head of School of Chemistry at UNSW.

Palli’s main research activities are currently on non-equilibrium self-assembly, systems chemistry, including pre-biotic chemistry and the origin of life. His work in this field is focused on how complex self-assembled functional systems emerge, using kinetically-stable polymer-based (polymersome) systems as a tool to study the emergence of function in complex systems. He has published several papers on protocell constructs based on polymersomes. His other research areas include the creation of self-assembled materials for nanomedicine, focusing on novel tissue culture materials based on self-assembled gels.
