At 3.5 billion years old, the Pilbara stromatolite fossils are the oldest convincing evidence for life on Earth found to date. These fossils provide key sites for studying how life formed both on Earth and elsewhere in the universe. The stromatolite fossils are under threat from indiscriminate collecting, despite being State Geoheritage Reserves. My research is evaluating state of the art conservation methods which can be applied to these sites to ensure they are protected for future generations.
