Biography: 

Mostly when we think of the fossil record we think of physical fossils, but many organisms leave behind chemical fossils as well. These chemical fossils – biomarkers - can provide complementary information to the physical fossil record. Recent research has shown that life may have a terrestrial origin in Hot Spring pools, so I study biomarkers in modern and fossilised hot springs in order to learn more about the origin of life, and to learn about preservation processes that may guide us in the search for life on Mars.
