Research Endeavour

To research, develop and demonstrate operational hyperspectral sensing technologies (field, mine, airborne and spaceborne) that enhance the effectiveness of mining industry to better explore, delineate, extract and environmentally manage economic mineral deposits.

Current Responsibilities

CSIRO project leader of numerous collaborative industry-funded projects. These projects aim to develop and demonstrate operational remote hyperspectral VNIR-SWIR-TIR technologies for enhanced mineral exploration, mining and mine environment of different commodity types. Technologies include airborne ARGUS, SEBASS, HyMap and AMSCAN and satellite-borne Hyperion, ASTER and CHRIS systems. Supporting agencies include national and international government bodies and multinational mining companies. Supervise project staff.

Significant role in the development of divisional strategic research-business plan for the Mineral Mapping Technologies Group

ASTER Science Team (AST) member and Australian representative. Principal investigator for Mt Fitton test site AST Geology Working Group

EO1 Hyperion Science Team member and co-investigator for the Australian geological test sites at Mt Fitton (SA) and Panorama (WA)

CHRIS/PROBA principal investigator for Giles Point test site (WA)

Australian leader for the CSIRO-ERSDAC (Japan) MOU and project development in satellite remote sensing applications

Promote the research through publications and conference papers (see below), workshops (numerous industry, university and other technical workshops in Australia and overseas) and student supervision (4 PhD, 3 Masters)

Hyperspectral consultant to a number of mining/exploration companies

Review journal papers and post graduate theses (Geochemical Exploration, Geophysics, IEEE TGARS)

Liase and collaborate with strategic national (ISPL) and international (ERSDAC, TRW, NASA, ESA) technology developers to develop operational systems suitable for the needs of the mining and exploration community.

Selected Career Highlights

First person to map Earth's surface mineralogy from space using the first spaceborne, civilian, hyperspectral VNIR-SWIR imaging system, Hyperion

Invited to join a NASA-Caltech-TRW proposal (unsuccessful) for a hyperspectral imaging mission to Mars

Winner of best paper of conference at the 2000 ERIM International Conference on Applied Geologic Remote Sensing, Las Vegas (Honorary mention for best paper at the previous conference ERIM conference, Vancouver 1999)

Establish and demonstrate remote mapping of silicate mineralogy and mineral chemistry (e.g. garnets) using new generation hyperspectral TIR systems (SEBASS, MIRACO2LAS).
