Biography:

My broad research interests encompass the origin of life on Earth, the refinement of criteria for assessing signs of life in the Precambrian rock record, modern and ancient sulfur biochemistry, and the application of this work to the detection of life on other planets. I study ancient life at a range of scales from kilometers to nanometers, which sees me spending time in the field (e.g., Pilbara, Gunflint) mapping the context of signs of life, as well as time in the laboratory applying a range of high-spatial resolution analytical techniques including secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman.

In 2009 I published a book summarizing the various approaches to searching for ancient signs of life “Early Life on Earth: A Practical Guide”.
