The making of Virtual Field Trips

Ongoing development: Virtual Field Trips

The first VFT created was in 2007 in a partnership between the ACA and NASA Learning Technologies. Geoffrey Bruce, who led the technical development of the VFT, is now undertaking his PhD in education technology while developing a new suite of VFTs.

Initially this was in partnership between the NASA Astrobiology teams at Arizona State University and MIT and the ACA, but other universities have since joined the partnership. The result is an amazing suite of dynamic, highly interaction and exploratory VFTs of use to a wide range of audiences from high school students to the public and to researchers preparing to go to the places covered by the VFTs.

Funding has come in a number of ways both in cash and in-kind to build a free resource that is pedagogically sound and opens the field experiences of science research to other audiences.
